The Firewalk of Commitment

21492118_sPeople have been asking me lately why I call my latest Way of Joy program a “Spiritual Fitness Boot Camp” — especially because I can’t help but laugh every time I say it, loving the oxymoron.

When I think about what is behind the boom of fitness boot camps that are springing up all over the country these days, I ask myself what specific qualities make people commit to doing one.

I believe it comes down to commitment — the willingness to do the hard work and go for it; consistency — you have to show up regularly to get the benefits; focus — whether on improved strength, flexibility, vitality; and keeping your eye on the prize — maybe that hot Epsom salts bath at the end of the day, a real dessert or glass of wine.

But the bottom line for me is what is the energy behind the drive we feel, whether as an entrepreneur offering your talent, support or product or a message you may be bringing to your community or family.

What is the energy you are offering to others these days?

Here’s To You, Chuck. Carrying Memory with Way of Joy Qigong

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen I learned that my beloved friend of 30+ years died last week, my legs literally went out from under me. Even though I had been part of Chuck’s support team since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a month ago and I was well aware that the end was near, it felt like a piece of ground had been snatched away.

I sat on the ground in shock for several moments, before some kind people came to my aid. I have carried this grief hard in me as the days have gone by. Truly, it is only today, as I prepare to lead  and speak at his memorial, that the grief has softened into a gentler kind of loss.

I believe when we lose someone, we can choose to carry a piece of them forward in our hearts. I love remembering that this beautiful soul lives on in me and in the many people (and animals) he touched. Today’s practice is a way to embody that intention.

(I have allowed little Jambalaya to appear in this video, because she was one of his biggest admirers.)

Who will you carry forward with this practice?

Wolf Talk: Where is your Focus?

13551955_sChange the way you look at things, and the things you look at change. — Wayne Dyer

For me, the entry into 2014 has been very intense with a complex mix of profound joy as I prepare for two upcoming Way of Joy programs and wrenching sorrow as I grieve the loss of a beloved friend.

This video, which I actually recorded over a year ago, feels like a good reminder to pay attention to what matters — whether you feel overwhelmed by intense events in your life or  you feel frustrated by things “beyond your control”.

Either way, I believe it is always a good idea to come back to your breath and set your intention on where you want to place your focus.

So I think I’ll go off to breathe and feed my wolf of acceptance and love.

Resistance: Useful or Unproductive?

Unknown“The shadow side of acceptance, resistance can be both destructive and constructive. Our resistance is destructive when it causes more suffering, when it functions as denial, a refusal to accept “what is.” Refusing to “accept” has the same impact as refusing to hear feedback, which leads to stagnation.

On the other hand, you may find at times that your resistance is incredibly useful, even when it seems to hold you back, because, if you look at it more closely, it contains information you do not have readily available. Resistance can actually be a hidden part of your discernment that, like the friction of a tire against the pavement, moves you forward.” —The Way of Joy

From Projections to Powerful Presence with Way of Joy Qigong

18793760_sWhen you are starting something new, taking a risk to grow, moving to a new level (or even when you’re avoiding any of that), how often does it feel like your focus shifts over to how other people see you? And what happens to your well-being when you forget the things you know to be true about yourself and are anxiously reading other people’s reactions to monitor what they’re thinking or feeling?

The holidays, especially if you are visiting with different family members that push your buttons is the perfect time to settle in and observe these patterns. Especially when they bring up a bunch of AFGO’s (Another F*#%ing Growth Opportunity). In fact, I recently broadcast a teleclass, The Holiday Table with Sharon Strand Ellison, the brilliant creator of Powerful Non-Defensive Communication™ looking at how we can manage or energy and communication skills when feeling triggered.

Today, I’ve been musing on how often, regardless of what I “know,” I still get nervous others’ judgments, even if I’m alone in my room. Luckily I have the perfect qigong tool to help bring me back to center. Now to remember using it during this busy week to come!

Facing Fears with Winter Qigong

SNowflakeThe season of Winter calls on the wisdom of the Water element, in its myriad of forms from raging rivers to delicate crystalline snowflakes. In the same way, you can cultivate your ability to adapt and flow as you move into the hush of the season.

Associated in Traditional Chinese Medicine with the kidneys, winter is the season to nourish and support this important organ, which regulates and balances water and fluids in your body.

The seat of the adrenal glands, which produce the fight / flight response, the kidneys are associated with the emotion of fear. Whether that fear has to do with growing fully into your own power or wrestling with your “inner critics” or external challenges, this is a perfect time of year to turn and face those voices, while keeping the inner flame of your consciousness alight to sustain your vision of where you want to go.

For me, while I’ve been thrilled to see registrations literally pouring in for my upcoming New Year’s event,  it’s been vital to not get bogged down by old fears. So many participants from last year’s Nourish the Flame: From Resolutions to Results have contacted me recently to re-register and report the amazing things they manifested this past year as a result of their experience in that one short afternoon. Powerful stuff! Ironically, as I take in the impact of what they report, I find myself facing my same old fears. So time to nourish my kidneys, get over it and get On with it.
