Transition Mama Archives #4

IMG_0876      Look Ma, No oxygen!

When my mama said, in my last vlog, that your prayers and good wishes were making her feel better, she wasn’t kidding. Even after a walk, her oxygen saturation is high and she is asking about going back to her apartment.

This evening was all about love, celebration and presence. I read some more of your words to her and she had tears in her eyes as she said “That’s so beautiful!” Your stories, energy and general kind wishes are really hitting home. Distance healing at play here.

Plus we are doing qigong every day and adding some BEMER sessions for her lungs. Hooray. It is a night of WOO HOO!

Transition Mama Archives #3

IMG_0852While Mama still has energy, we practice daily qigong

I’ve continued to be deeply moved by the responses and stories that you have shared with me as comments on this video blog and to my Social Media posts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for offering your own stories, thoughts, prayers, and loving energy to both my mom and me during this time. It means more than I can say — to both of us.

Yesterday I asked mama, who has seen my videos, posts, and your responses, how she felt about my creating this blog to share these moments during her end stages of her life — to check in to see whether it felt ok or if she would prefer to keep this journey private. Her response was so typical of her strength, courage, and “no bullshit” attitude towards life that I wanted to share her words with you.

She told me she feels both flattered and amazed because, as she put it, she had no idea that “so many people would give a shit.” She added “Dying is not something I’m ashamed of. It’s not like a venereal disease or telling people about some horrible thing I’ve done like robbed a bank or murdered someone. Everyone has to face this sometime and maybe it helps them. I think privacy equals loneliness, like somehow I should be shut away. I would resent that. And what people say makes me so much less lonely, that they care.”

That said, she seems to be actually getting a little stronger, even though she does have a terminal illness. In fact, she just called me to say she had just had a wonderful shower, the first one in a long time with the help of a kind aide.

But enough of my take on it all, here she is…

Transition Mama Archives #2

Mom qigong 2 mom qigong 5:22

“Want to practice qigong?” I asked. “What a Great Idea!” Mama answered.

It was one of those rushed days, so I ate a hard boiled egg for a late lunch as I was driving to a meeting — Not healthy, I know, I know.

But with the scent of the egg, I had a kind of Highway 24-Proust moment— a memory of my mom picking me up after school when I was about 7 to take me to my very first theater audition in New York City. She brought a hard boiled egg and an apple for me to eat in the yellow cab on our way downtown. It all seemed so exotic and sophisticated.

So with the scent of an egg, I had a chance to remember how many times she saw something in me and went out of her way to be sure I’d have a shot at my dream. A good day for gratitude.

Speaking of food memories…

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

MD2Jungian psychologist and story-teller Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes once wrote “In some way, regardless of gender, locale, age, marital status, everyone is a mother.”

I love this idea, especially these days as I’ve been thinking about how so many people on the planet right now — regardless of gender identity — are birthing a new paradigm shift, a renewed and refreshed movement towards balance, wholeness, respect for all beings.

Given that Spring is a birthing season, what better time of year to celebrate Mothers, and the acts of nurturing, rearing, promoting growth? After all, now is the time that any seeds of dreams, ideas or projects you have been gestating through the winter, are ready to come out. That is why I think of this time of year to be a time of “emergenc-y”, when, just like a women in labor, your life force is pushing to be come out into the world.

For me, as I “mother” the system of healing and living that has become The Way of Joy, I bow my head in gratitude to my own beautiful and courageous mama who taught me well the importance of letting things bloom in their own timing. Even now, at the age of 91, she continues to be a model of unconditional love in my life. I am so grateful.

One of my latest “birthings” is a powerful virtual program to optimize the power of this season. I have gathered some of my best information and tools in a Seed to Blossom Starter Pack to give you a quick shot of energetic fuel to make this Spring the best one yet. And there are a couple spaces left in the Live VIP workshop on May 22. Contact me directly

A Seed in the Hull: Embodied Consciousness

A Seed in the Hull: Embodied Consciousness

12928952_sAlthough I was thrown up in the air for only a fraction of a second, it was long enough for me to have a whole internal discussion. I experienced complete stillness as my body flew through the air and within that stillness I had a life-changing dialogue with myself.   — The Way of Joy

Twenty-four years ago I was hit by a car while walking across the street — a game-changing moment to say this least. I learned a lot by that cosmic kick-in-the-butt, and even though my mind forgets to commemorate that moment of awakening, my body manages to remind me every year. Although I made this video a year ago, I went through the same cycle this year as once again I felt a vague unease in my body…

Qigong Musings for Spring Equinox

Flower cascadeSpring is the season we bring forth seeds of the self that have been gestating during the winter. It is a time when your dreams push to come out and blossom — whether in ways that refresh old visions, or are new inspirations. Although many people associate Spring with light-hearted images of young love and butterflies, Spring is also a time of “emergenc-y,” where your life force pushes forward unexpectedly and in potent ways…If you imagine a young tree as a pale seedling pushing through the winter-hardened earth, reaching for the warmth and light of the sun, you have an image for how insistent your own life force becomes during this point in your cycle. Way of Joy

Although I recorded this vlog almost 1 year ago, I think it is worth sharing again as we move towards Spring Equinox, which is considered to be the peak (as opposed to onset) of this season in the Chinese calendar.

One of my favorite qigong forms, Blossom in the Spring, has continued to inform me in ever-deeper ways over the years. This seated form takes the practitioner through a cycle of life, death and rebirth, the cycle that connects us to all living beings. In the practice, there is a moment where a budding blossom appears to close before opening into full blossom. I love musing on the ramifications of this moment of expansion and contraction, how resistance can be just like pulling back an arrow in a bow before releasing to move towards a new level of accomplishment or spiritual opening.

Want to know more about this powerful practice? I am so excited to announce that I have gathered some of my very best information and tools for a virtual program, The Seed to Blossom Starter Pack will give you a quick shot of energetic fuel to make this Spring the best one yet. Or better yet, come to a VIP Sunday Morning retreat on May 22.
